Adventure

Adventure is a game similar to Tomb Raider and Uncharted. It was created by Full Sail University to help students learn different level design techniques. In this project, I was tasked with creating a level for this game from scratch, and then working in a small team to integrate my level, along with others, to create the full game level.

I invite you to watch a short video playthrough of my team’s final Adventure level. My individual work runs from 10:52 to 13:45.

Inspiration

Xuánkōng Sì, or the Hanging Temple.

I was inspired by the Hanging Temple near Mount Heng in Shanxi Province, China for my level’s environment. However, rather than having my temple be located on the side of the cliff for everyone to see, I opted to hide my temple inside my cliff to give an environmental explanation as to why it has never been located before.

Llanthony Priory Abbey - Brecon Beacons National Park

For my personal take on the temple, I was inspired by ancient castles and churches found throughout the United Kingdom. I enjoyed this design theme so much that I elected to include it throughout my level, instead of just in my temple.

Level Design

While designing my level, I wanted to put more focus on the platforming mechanics, instead of the puzzle portion of the game. Therefore, I utilized the mantle mechanic heavily for platforming throughout my level. During playtesting, I used a blue box to show the player that they could hang from a certain ledge, but when I placed my final assets, I showcased these ledges with small planks. Many jumps were carefully placed with just enough distance to make the jump if they were moving at the right speed.
